Born in 1940 in Saitama Prefecture, he ran a sushi restaurant while cultivating a passion for small bonsai, eventually starting to fire his own handmade pots. In 1978, he and five others, including his wife, Tanimoto, built a shared kiln called “Rokuraku Kiln.” Many of Arashiyama’s works are intricately decorated with basket-weave patterns carved in fine relief across the entire piece.
